Join me for an idyllic day making botanical cyanotype prints while learning about Welsh folklore in a beautiful wildlife garden setting with live harp music.
Workshop structure:

12 - 1pm Tea and cake in the garden

1-4pm Cyanotype printing
The day will start with a 1 hour wildflower walk in Hook where we’ll identify plants and talk about their Welsh names and associated folklore, mythology, herbalism and ecological importance. We’ll then return to the wildlife garden for a restorative cup of tea and a slice of bara brith or vegan banana bread, before learning the principles of cyanotype printing and then making a series of your own botanical prints. While you work you’ll be accompanied by birdsong and live harp music in the garden.

Cyanotype Printing
Cyanotype printing is an early form of photography developed in the 1800s, that works by exposing light sensitive chemicals to sunlight, creating a white silhouette on a brilliant blue background. It' works especially well with plants, producing striking silhouettes that make beautiful artwork.
It’s a simple and addictive process and you’ll get the chance to experiment with different techniques and exposure times before designing a series of A6, A5 and A4 prints to take home with you. You can also incorporate Welsh plant names or other text into your prints using acetate. The paper will be pre-coated so you can focus on your designs. The process is safe and non-toxic and no prior experience is necessary.
The Garden
Developed by Suzanne Williams, the garden has been designed to encourage all kinds of wildlife, including a variety of birds, bees, butterflies, moths, hedgehogs, newts, frogs, beetles and more. Over the last few years Suzanne has created a wildlife haven that offers many benefits to different creatures by planting native wild species, as well as creating a variety of habitats including two ponds, hedgerows and dedicated spaces for creatures to nest, hatch and grow. We’ll be working in the garden, making prints right amongst the plants and pollinators.
Accessibility
The wildflower walk will last about one hour covering approximately half a mile with frequent stopping to talk about and collect plants.
Unfortunately the garden isn’t wheelchair accessible and features a mix of lawn, pebble and slate paths which can be narrow and uneven in places. Printing tables will be set up below an awning to offer some shade, otherwise the garden is in full sun most of the day. Chairs are available but due to the nature of cyanotype printing (lots of short exposures) you’ll be moving around the garden most of the afternoon.
There is an available toilet in the ground floor of the house and easy access to drinking water as well as cups of tea from the kitchen and a fridge to store any food you want to bring.
If the weather is predicted to be very hot, the day can be adapted to be more shady, however as it’s an outdoor workshop it is weather dependent, and may be cancelled / postponed if conditions are predicted to be challenging.
There is free parking available in Hook on nearby streets. More info on this will be sent after booking.
Also the garden is full of pollinators so there will likely be many bees buzzing about!

Cancellations: If a workshop needs to be cancelled / postponed due to poor weather conditions, you’ll receive an email notification and a full refund will be offered.
